Innovation for Everyone
xista science ventures portfolio companies Syntropic and VALANX Biotech present their technologies as part of the "Innovation Corner" exhibition series, at the Vienna Museum of Technology.
In a constantly changing world, new ideas and technological breakthroughs are of crucial importance. Innovation not only strengthens the economy, but also improves the quality of life for all of us and helps to overcome global challenges. The "Innovation Corner" exhibition format at the Vienna Museum of Technology offers Austrian start-ups and innovative companies a platform to present their pioneering technologies.
In this context, two start-ups from the xista innovation ecosystem, were invited. Their innovative approaches to the treatment of depression and the production of protein-based drugs can be seen at the Technical Museum until December, along with eight other projects from the fields of medical technology and life sciences.
A New Approach to Treat Psychiatric Diseases
In Europe alone, around 90 million people suffer from depression, which places a heavy burden on both individuals and society. The current standard treatment is oral antidepressants, however 50% of patients relapse or do not benefit from the medication, which is often associated with severe side effects.
Syntropic's goggle-like technology on display in the museum is based on flickering light that sends signals to the brain innitiating the formation of new connections between neurons. This process, known as neuronal plasticity, helps the brain heal and tackles the causes of psychiatric illnesses such as depression. In the future, this innovation could offer a non-invasive, side-effect-free alternative to standard drug therapy.
Producing Drugs Specific, Fast and Safely
Proteins play a crucial role in all pysiological processes of the human body, from transporting nutrients to fighting disease. In modern medicine, proteins are used, for example, to increase the retention time of chemical substances in the body or to transport active substances specifically to diseased tissue.
The challenge is to design the connection between protein and drug - also known as conjugation - in a targeted and specific way. In the museum, VALANX Biotech communicates this complex process and their innovative solution with the help of a video game. By making small changes to the protein composition, the start-up can standardize the conjugation process, and thus carry out controllable, reproducible production of protein-based drugs.
Promotion of Innovation in Austria
Factors such as accessible technology transfer and the provision of financial resources and infrastructure, as made possible by the xista ecosystem, promote innovation and support new ideas and technological breakthroughs. An early start through youth education, a strong research culture and its communication in formats such as the "Innovation Corner" of the Vienna Museum of Technology continue to contribute to the culture of innovation in Austria.
