xbio Alumna Pioneers Innovation in Emergency Medical Devices with SVAN
xbio, was founded to transform inspiring scientific discoveries of the thriving Vienna life science sector into impactful startups - Dr. Gunpreet Oberoi, postdoctoral researcher at the Medical University Vienna and xbio Masterclass participant 2024 exemplifies this mission perfectly. As an alumna of the xbio, Gunpreet has taken her pioneering project, SVAN (Safe Vascular Access Needle), to incredible heights, winning the Spin-off Fellowship from FFG, the 3D Printing in Life Sciences Award and the anniversary investment prize at IECT Summer School 2024 where she received tickets for Falling Walls Science Summit 2024.
SVAN: Revolutionizing Emergency Care for Newborns and Animals
SVAN is an injection device designed for emergencies involving newborns and animals, addressing a critical need in over 1.4 million cases annually worldwide. The device provides rapid bone/intraosseous access, allowing healthcare professionals to deliver life-saving medications within just 90 seconds. Designed for a wide range of users, including neonatologists, pediatricians, veterinarians, emergency responders, and even military personnel, SVAN promises to make a significant impact in emergency medicine.
Supported by Austria Wirtschaftsservice (aws) with Prototype Funding in 2021 and recently awarded the prestigious Spin-off Fellowship from FFG (Österreichische Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft GmbH), SVAN allows speed, reliability, and safety in critical care scenarios, aiming to redefine emergency medical interventions.
From xbio Demo Day Victory to I.E.C.T. Summer School Success
Dr. Oberoi’s entrepreneurial journey gained significant momentum during her time at xbio masterclass, where she honed her skills in market assessment, leadership, and business strategy. An experience that culminated in a standout performance at the xbio Demo Day on June 27th, 2024, where Gunpreet competed against six other talented researchers in front of industry leaders Regina Hodits (Wellington Partners), Elvira Kainersdorfer (LISAvienna), Peter Nussbaumer (Lead Discovery Center GmbH), and Larissa Kahr (Takeda).
Following her triumph at xbio, Gunpreet took her entrepreneurial ambitions to the I.E.C.T. Summer School on Entrepreneurship in Innsbruck, Austria. Competing with a diverse group of scientists and early-stage startups, Gunpreet once again shone brightly, winning the €100,000 anniversary investment prize and earning an invitation to the Falling Walls Science Summit 2024 in Berlin. Her recent performance at European Healthcare Forum for Additive Manufacturing (EHFAM ) in Basel has additionally earned her the 3D Printing in Life Sciences Award.
